§ 78-14. Unlawful riding.
No person shall ride on any vehicle upon any portion thereof not designed or intended for the use of passengers. No person under 16 years of age shall be transported in the rear cargo area of any pickup truck on the highways of Virginia. The provisions of this section shall not apply to transportation of persons in the bed of any pickup truck being operated:
(1)
As a part of an organized parade authorized by the state department of transportation or the locality in which the parade is being conducted; or
(2)
On or across a highway from one field or parcel of land to another field or parcel of land in connection with farming operations. This shall not apply to an employee engaged in the necessary discharge of a duty or to persons riding within truck bodies in space intended for merchandise.
